- Saccharification, fermentation, and distillation must take place at a distillery in Japan.
- The spirit must be aged for at least three years in wooden casks (700L or smaller) within Japan.
- Bottling must also take place in Japan, and the final product must be at least 40% ABV.
- Caramel colouring may be used for minor colour adjustment.
These standards ensure reliability and preserve the quality that Japanese whisky is known for.
